For what it's worth, somewhere between r1497 and r1797 (yes I know that's
a huge range) if you don't set the txpower explicitly the card(AR5213As
here) now sends with much lower power.
Just swapping an old driver for new in the same hardware resulted in 10
dBm lower output on the spectrum analyzer (and much higher packet loss in
a multi-node setup) - explicitly setting 'iwconfig wlan0 txpower XX'
brought them back into line.
It sounds like there may be more going on here as well, but I thought I'd
mention it.
