I would be willing to turn on some newsgroups (astually already did - one from
my ISP) and start including News in my regular testing procedures.

Not that I have noticed. I haven't used News since I swapped to Linux but used
is in conjunction with Hamster news/mail server with Win2K.

My initial thoughts are there are two major initial glaring problems:

a. It treats NNTP servers like IMAP server (ie it is basically an online news
reader not offline) b. It does not have a .newsrc use functionality.

The "create a folder for every group" concept is not going to scale to news
reading. I want to hit subscribe and have everything else done for me like
most other news programs do. ATM I use Mozilla and have used OE (ugh) and Pan
and various others over the years.

I would also suggest we examine the only standard for functionality I have
been able to find for News readers ( http://www.xs4all.nl/~js/gnksa/ ) and let
that guide us as we proceed. What do you reckon? Does this seem sound as a
guideline? I am going to download it and understand it.

I must also get a copy of the RFC and see what it says.

Let the fun begin :-)
