.newsrc is almost a standard, there'd have to be a fairly compelling reason to
do something more proprietary.

A nice backend database with a good language / API could be very nice to
offload a lot of work but everything comes at a price. I think for the moment,
that price is too high. But like you, I'm open to convincing.
