i am not proposing adding SQL ala MySQL or PostgreSQL. i'm a fairly
experienced PostgreSQL programmer, and i don't think it's necessary or
desireable to add something like that.

the simple databases such as berkeley DB, however, are another matter, as
they're basically simple, fast single key lookups against simple single
record type arrays of information. my mental picture is of a variant on
.newsrc, but kept in something berkeley DB like instead of as a flat text
file.
