Well, I appreciate the problem as such icons would be very easy to draw,
but on the other hand I was counting on the tooltip and later on knowledge
to give the 'real' explanation of the icon (that's beating the icon's goal,
but ...). 
I don't think that we should get stopped by the fact that drawing good
icons is difficult, it is an art (a difficult one) by itself, but if one
doesn't start with bad icons (such as an acronym in very small font),
nobody will come up with improvements.

Anyway the drop down menu is a good idea. 
As for the placement of additional features, it seems to be a recurring
question popping up twice a year or so. May be it should be solved it 'the
abstract' (i.e. on a more genreal level) once for all (well rather once for
a while). If I recollect correctly, Jerry is a UI person and he could lend
an hand in 'redesigning' M's interface, or at least the generics of it.

This doesn't mean that M should change face in a snap, but one could then
try to move in a certain direction when the chance is given.
