 I just found that Mahogany is definitely correct because it behaves in the
same way as Microsoft Word! ;-) Indeed, try to activate "replace *bold* and
_italic_ with real formatting" option in the "Auto correct" dialog -- it
does what it says it does.


 Also, Wiki rules say that underscore is used for italics:

 Finally, this URL

says that underscore is used for emphasizing but then goes on to say that
in typography underlining and italics are synonyms...

 So the conclusion is clear: this should be configurable via a dialog
mapping characters to the styles. It doesn't mean I'm going to do it any
time soon however...
