If MS says that is the way it is a sure thing it is wrongly
interpreted standard ;-)

I didn't find those specific ones. I guess for me it just seems more
natural to use a forward slash which looks like an italic letter and
the underline which looks like underline. 

Maybe some users can give their opinions? Granted, 95% of the time I
use *bold* only anyway.

We have consensus on asterisk for *bold* at least then :-)
