I heard that college of engg kidangoor doesnt support FOSS much. They dont
use/recommend linux. They dont allow students to do mini project in PHP saying
that it is a very complex language.

Dear All,

I guess conduct the alternative monthly meetings on eng/MCA colleges will
create a very good relation  with students and community,

I do not think conducting monthly meetings of ILUG Cochin at different places
is good,

But there can be meetings, seminars or discussions otherwise.

Lot of colleges have already invited ILUG Cochin for seminars

and presentations.

ILUG -Cochin chapter should work as a mentor for  Eng/Graduate students.we have
a lot of volunteers who are having experience/knowledge in this domain.

Yes its a good idea, but first we need to make students understand of

the community framework, so that they can come forward rather than

we push them.

Besides a lot of volunteers in ILUG Cochin have mentored students

from different parts of Ernakulam. But unfortunately we do not have

any record or archive of the project/ assignment they have done.

I think its very important to archive ideas and projects so that we

have a pool of them which will be referenced by students.

We need free software groups in colleges and schools that can

        the issues regarding students is

how many are genuinely interested in doing projects? may be

        25% in a class.

knowledge  of students in programming will be limited when

they are in college only after they get out will they

understand better ( this is the case with all courses) by the

time the project time is over.

the top priority of students is to score well in their exam. (

Every large scale change starts with awareness.

                       I agree

Students should be aware of their freedom to

                           choose their own topics.

It is not only about topics, freedom in a broader

sense is being lost in academics on the whole,

Of course, there needs to be a starting point

        which is

                       this.

If this issue gets noticed by the academic

community, we can push for a circular from the

university. For that to happen, this needs

        to be

                           discussed throughout the community.

What I feel can be done

                       - Create a pool of project ideas ( there are a

        lot of

                       Free Software Projects on the

Internet at different stages of development, we

        need

to create a sort of legend for

                       students ,

                       - Create a page on the Internet that will serve

        as a

                       reference to teachers,

so that they are convinced of the scope of the

        project

and how it can do good

to the student, college and most important the

                       "Community".

                       - Once projects are completed they are uploaded

        to the

                       website and also

are presented and spoken of at events and Community

                       group meetings

(like ILUG Cochin), and the project will

        develop wings.

                       - This will serve as an example and lesson for the

                       other students as well

and then we have a whole lot of useful software

                       created by the students

                       for the community.

                       - The Web page also needs information from the

        normal

                       users and business

people, so that they can put in their requirements

                       into the page so that

it becomes " a self sustaining community".

                       - Finally let us begin upon, and reiterate on

        what is

                       the aim of an

academic project in our society and again " the

        free

                       software community".

Many times students do not know what path they

        need to

                       take to create

                       something useful for the society.

We need to draft an open letter to all educational

                       institutions

which states what an academic projects means to the

                       society and how

important is the freedom for students to pursue

        their

                       own interests and how

they can guide them to the right path.

There are lot of teachers and academicians in the

                       Mailing List. I believe

we can get lot of information from them. :)

                       Thank You
