Hello Ashok,

I think you have made valid points here, but...

Hello,

This academic project discussion has been going on for quite some time!

How many students will write code for the sake of creativity, intrest etc?

VERY VERY FEW!

Most want to use IT as a vehicle to riches.

Being a computer assembler, network engineer, freelance programmer, consultant
and corporate trainer since 1990 without any formal degree
in computer science I can safely say I have seen a lot of aspiring IT
professionals in my time and written/helped write projects for students.

Pre 2000 before the IT industry hit India in a big way, most students
went for computer degrees out of intrest, they contributed a lot to
their own project, I helped many of them with R& D and code prototyping. Today
these guys are in the top ranks of their companies.

After trying to get students interested in core programming and getting
my reputation badly bruised and becoming poorer by a good amount of cash,
I have wound up my institute.

My former students post 2005, some even connected to the LUG, now say I don't
know Linux programming, kernel or otherwise!

Who is this connected to LUG, everyone single person coming to the meeting is connected to
ILUG Cochin and a member of the community.

I mean, not only for this mail, blaming Free Software groups and/or the community in the
context of Individuals is real bad.
My methodology of training was to explain a concept, write some code
to get them started and provide them with books, printouts etc, rather than
follow up on this foundation these guys stare at the PC for some time, flip the
pages of the book and then say 'Saar, I have finished that, what
next?'.

Tell me, is Saar expected to know the complete Linux Kernel API extempore?
If Saar refers to some book/site to clarify a doubt they say 'Saar is reading
from book/site, even I can do that', It does not strike the student that Saar
knows which book/site to refer because of long hours spent on reference and
research!

Here are the common statements made by students:

I know C language, teach me Kernel programming

I know basic PHP, teach me PEAR

I know basic this ... teach me advanced that ....

the student knows every thing without having coded anything!

Having worked with MS-Assembler, BASIC, Cobol, C/C++, Clipper, Delphi,
Java, C#, TCL/TK, Python and more during the last decade or so I am
now focussed on core computing training/consulting for companies into realtime
systems and software products using C/C++.

How many today even know or bother about C/C++ the very base of software
science today? They say its dead! Within last three months I have delivered
training in C/C++ related topics to companies such as Siemens, Safran
Aerospace, Wipro, Accenture and more.

All my training and material were developed on GNU Debian Etch.

Templatized Data Structures, GOF Design Patterns in C/C++, Template
Metaprogramming and STL, Boost C/C++ Libraries. ColdFusion MX 8, Rational Rose
Realtime 7.0 and more.

Unless students and teachers focus on acquire a passion for knowledge with the
strong belief that knowledge is power, PHPs, Pythons, Javas and Rubies will
come and go, but our students will always be equal to India's primary
contribution to the world - the number 0!

regards,

Ashok Shenoy.

I heard that college of engg kidangoor doesnt support FOSS
much. They dont use/recommend linux. They dont allow
students to do mini project in PHP saying that it is a very
complex language.

I do not think conducting monthly meetings of ILUG Cochin
at different places is good,

But there can be meetings, seminars or discussions
otherwise.

Lot of colleges have already invited ILUG Cochin for
seminars

and presentations.

ILUG -Cochin chapter should work as a mentor for
Eng/Graduate students.we have a lot of volunteers who are
having experience/knowledge in this domain.

Yes its a good idea, but first we need to make students
understand of

the community framework, so that they can come forward
rather than

we push them.

Besides a lot of volunteers in ILUG Cochin have mentored
students

from different parts of Ernakulam. But unfortunately we do
not have

any record or archive of the project/ assignment they have
done.

I think its very important to archive ideas and projects so
that we

have a pool of them which will be referenced by students.

         the issues regarding students is

how many are genuinely interested in doing
projects? may be

         25% in a class.

knowledge of students in programming will be
limited when

they are in college only after they get out
will they

understand better ( this is the case with all
courses) by the

time the project time is over.

the top priority of students is to score well
in their exam. (

cut off to get into a company)

in any case if they get into a company the
company trains them.

                        I agree

                            Students should be
aware of their freedom to

                            choose their own
topics.

                        It is not only about
topics, freedom in a broader

                        sense is being lost in
academics on the whole,

                        Of course, there needs to
be a starting point

         which is

                        this.

                            If this issue gets
noticed by the academic

                            community, we can
push for a circular from the

                            university. For
that to happen, this needs

         to be

                            discussed
throughout the community.

What I feel can be done

                        - Create a pool of
project ideas ( there are a

         lot of

                        Free Software Projects on
the

                        Internet at different
stages of development, we

         need

                        to create a sort of
legend for

                        students ,

                        - Create a page on the
Internet that will serve

         as a

                        reference to teachers,

                        so that they are
convinced of the scope of the

         project

and how it can do good

                        to the student, college
and most important the

                        "Community".

                        - Once projects are
completed they are uploaded

         to the

                        website and also

                        are presented and spoken
of at events and Community

                        group meetings

                        (like ILUG Cochin), and
the project will

         develop wings.

                        - This will serve as an
example and lesson for the

                        other students as well

and then we have a whole
lot of useful software

                        created by the students

                        for the community.

                        - The Web page also needs
information from the

         normal

                        users and business

                        people, so that they can
put in their requirements

                        into the page so that

                        it becomes " a self
sustaining community".

                        - Finally let us begin
upon, and reiterate on

         what is

                        the aim of an

                        academic project in our
society and again " the

         free

                        software community".

                        Many times students do
not know what path they

         need to

                        take to create

                        something useful for the
society.

We need to draft an open
letter to all educational

                        institutions

                        which states what an
academic projects means to the

                        society and how

                        important is the freedom
for students to pursue

         their

                        own interests and how

                        they can guide them to
the right path.

                        There are lot of teachers
and academicians in the

                        Mailing List. I believe

                        we can get lot of
information from them. :)

                        Thank You
