There are many reasons for your mail to end up in spam folder.

1. somebody marked your mails as spam.
2. You have dynamic ip and you got an ip previously blacklisted.
3. You used many "spammy" words in your mail (like "FREE", "discount",
"amazing" "visit my site" etc.)

In my experience, gmail's spam filter is perfect. It caches all spam without
any false positives.
