Quoting ...
So to put it short - When you say - "Think of Adobe Dreeamweaver as
an example. As far as I know there are no substitute for that in the
free or opensource section, not even near to that" - you are not fit
for being a part of this community as you are using GNU / Free
Software just for your selfishness and you may never have had true
respect and allegiance to a community /a brotherhood that creates
Software just for the fun of it :)
WOW That was slightly more than what I expected, but it is ok ;)
I started using Mozilla suite from the very beginning. When IE was the
only browser in the IBM ACE lab in Cochin and CDs and CD drives were
not very common in the lab, I cut the mozilla suite into small pieces
using some software and took it to the lab, took me 4 days or so and
once it is all done, all computers had it and that was the first time
most of my friends were browsing internet using something other than
IE. No, I am not boasting things, but the point was
There are good alternatives to paid or closed source in the opensource
section. Which are great in functionalities and quite reliable and
robust too. Best examples (almost all I use) which are very useful for
developers as well as common people are - Firefox, Thunderbird,
Filezilla, Pidgin, OpenOffice, Gimp, VLC, Sumatra, Infrarecorder,
Sunbird, Audacity, 7 Zip and the list goes on. Even an MS guy will
agree on this list.
On the other hand, I repeat again, There are no alternatives to
product like DW - yet. That is a statement not against Opensource but
it is a fact. And where this selfishness comes from? Think of this
scenario. You are a developer and the client want you to do the
project using DW and many functionalities of DW. You first try a lot
of alternatives and come back to DW as there are no other options. Now
are you selfish? Never! I mentioned the example of DW because I have
the right to mention that. In other words, I have tried a lot of
alternatives and could not find something competent enough to DW. And
I proudly use most of the softwares I mentioned above because they
work for me very well. Whenever I see someone using paid/pirated/
proprietary software instead of the list I ask them to try it and in
almost all cases they were very happy about it.
Now, do I qualify for being a part of the community ? Or it is
strictly for people using only Opensource and nothing else ? (lol,
just kidding, now do not take it seriously)
I am the person who created the ILUG Cochin website version 2 and
version 3 without using any proprietary softwares. And those pages
were not that bad, worked even in a text only browser !
Please leave the 'selfish' part, other than that all is well :)
Best Regards
Din.
