In the case of Gimp, I am afraid industry will not adopt it until
unless the UI becomes user friendly. The software is powerful and has
every feature that competition has. Now the colour management also
works almost fine & and only real issue is 16 bit support. Now, due
the usability issues, the productivity will be much less and hence the
industry will not adopt it. ie publishing houses, graphic processing
houses etc. Also the lack of 16 bit support & good colour management
makes it difficult to use for professional print purposes. Cine Paint
is out there, but it lacks features and usability even though it
claims to have a better image processing engine compared to Gimp.

I am not familiar with inkscape but the UX seems to be really good.

Being said, this, showing the world the work that is done with Gimp
can be a good idea and that will interest people adopt the tool. If a
group of college students take up to change the UI a bit I think that
will be a good final year project and it could possibly win a gsoc
entry too. Another idea will be to add 16 bit support but I am not
sure the image processing engine is extensible. But these two will be
tremendous value to human kind.
