I would also badly need substring matching in applying/removing labels, and Gmail's implementation lacks that. Could this issue be fixed by adding a switch to the Mailplane Preferences and allowing users to decide whether they want to use the Gmail or the Mailplane labeling feature with the "l" shortcut?
