Adam and All, Do you have uncheck the checkbox in front of "Preferences -> Advanced -> Load Google Gears..." I had this problem (slowness in Mailplane, working..., still working..., badges) myself because I forgot to do this little trick and now I have unchecked it, it works as before the "OffLine" and "Safari 4" buzz (no problem with the slowness..) !
Don't forget to restart "your engine" after having done the trick !
