I wanted to install the Google Gears Safari plug-in to enable offline Gmail access on a computer running Safari 4.0.2 and Mailplane 2.0.11/992. I visited http://gears.google.com in Safari and the page said Gears was not compatible with the version of Safari I was running. So I searched for it on macupdate.com and found a page for "Google Gears 0.5.4.2 Safari Plug-in" at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25083/google-gears. I downloaded the installer from there, quit Safari, installed Gears, reopened Safari, and navigated back to http://gears.google.com. Now the page said "Gears is Installed", and gave the current version as "0.5.22.0;official;opt;osx;safari" (which doesn't actually match the version in the title of the macupdate page, so maybe macupdate got the version wrong). Under that there is a "Click here to re-install" link which downloads the exact same file as the one on macupdate. The next thing I did was to verify that I had the "Google Gears Settings..." menu item in the Safari menu, which I did. Then I accessed my Gmail account for the first time after installing Gears, and the "Offline" link was replaced with a Gears icon. I clicked it and went through the process to perform an initial sync. Offline gmail access has been working in Safari beautifully ever since.
Then I opened Mailplane. Under the Mailplane menu, "Google Gears Settings..." is nowhere to be found, but I do see a Gears icon rather than an "Offline" link. When I click the icon to get the status, it says it's synchronizing, but the progress bar remains empty and underneath it it is stuck saying "Starting, please wait..." I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the same version of Google Gears to no avail. Is there a newer version of Gears or Mailplane I should be using instead?
