Now also tried to set system language to english, no change. Another thing: When I go to gears.google.com with Safari 4.0.2, I'm still told that this brwoser is not supported. Absurdly, when I use iCab (that definitely is NOT supported), I'm prompted to install Google Gears (when it's currently uninstalled).
Also deleted Google Gears dir in Library/Applicateion Support, no change.
