I always enjoy this quote which John Hessler appends to his postings. I believe it represents and evokes just one of a large number of metaphysical or philosophical topics which inevitably appear when one begins a truly serious study of mappings and their apparent ( as well as possible) histories. For instance, the possible relation between maps and visual art occasionally appears on this list, and I wonder if that connection is taken seriously enough as to causal probabilities , for instance, when some of the more controversial topics are discussed.
