One thing to add here,
when you go to the MS DOS prompt, type in:
copy /b MyPrinterFile.prn LPT1 (or other printer port name)
The /b tells your computer that its a binary file, not a text file. Without
the /b, the file might have a Ctrl+Z character in it, which signals the end
of file for text files. This might cause the computer to stop halfway
through.
Hope this helps

A thing we did for a similar situation was the following:
1) Get a printer driver for your plotter, install it and set to print to
file.
2) In MapInfo, set the plotter as your printer, set up your layout and print
to a
file.
3)Hope you have a way to carry large files aroung (zip drive, CD cutter,
network) because now you have to get your printer file to the computer
that runs
the plotter.
4)In MS DOS prompt, write: copy MyPrinterFile LPT1 (or whatever the printer
port
is). You may have to try a couple of ways, it has been a while I may have
forgotten
exact syntax.
5)Presto!
