We tried that once before and a lot of people complained. The
problem is that some people prefer to read MI-L mail from the
web-based discussion forum(s) rather than to receive all the mail
this list generates in their mailboxes, so they don't actually
"subscribe." So if we limit close the list to email posted by
subscribers only, then non-subscribers can't post even an
occasional message without having to sign up, post, and sign off
every time. Some also have firewall issues, but I think there's
not many in that boat.

However, here's some new reasons why subscribing might not be so
tedious:
1. We now offer a digest version of the list, so email volume may
not be such a problem. You could sign up that way and just
receive one packet a day.

2. We are also stripping attachments and HTML formatting, so you
won't get viruses from email anymore.

Closing the list would virtually eliminate the anonymous junk
mail, but that means only subscribers could post messages. We
don't have the option of maintaining a list of subscribers who
are *not* sent daily mail; majordomo doesn't have that.

The other thing we could do is to have a moderator screen all
mail before it gets posted. If somebody wants to take on that
job, let's talk, but I don't want to do it.

Think about it and if anyone has any strong opinions, speak up.
Otherwise it will most likely stay as it is, but we'll attempt to
reduce spam by blocking repeated offenders at the server level.
