I haven`t found the solution, but have operational results for a 200
question field survey (like a census) with 5 entities (site, house, home,
newhouse, resident, watersource) that operates in Palms, with the ability of
collecting gps fixes at will (lat, long, alt, utc time, utc date).

I am using combined RandMcnally GPS (us$60), a plam IIIxe (us$179) and
Thinkdb 2 relational data base (US$40), and PDAbytes plugin (US$10) for
collecting a gps fix within a Thinkdb tinybyte.

For viewing the palm as a gps I am using gpspilot.com compass app. It is
posible to have gpspilot tracker for viewing your gps position on a map,
plus collecting points and routes (I think), but is cost US$50 the licence
for one palm.

After collecting the data in the field, with a syncro and Thinkingbytes
Desktop software we can send the data to Access, re create the entities
relations, converting the lat, long and alt to appropiate format, and then
conecting that data to mapinfo for creating the points.

The only drawback is on mapinfo's side as it can not work with relational
databases. Therefore the queries are made in Access and that data later
associates to the corresponding espatial entity.

The advantajes are many when compared to hand written survey, it is still a
low cost option (comparable to a medium to good gps) and mainly it end ups
as an open system, in the sense that you can create your questionary at
will. Very usefull for structured surveys (selection, multiple selection,
checkboxes, and so).

If you need any more info, ask.
