I am hoping that the collective wisdom on this list can help eliminate some
of my ignorance. I have used MapInfo on the desktop, but this question may
have non-MapInfo solutions.
We have a web-based interface to our data repository at work, which
requires entering lat/lon values to limit the area from which the query
results are returned. Problem for me is, I always need to find a map to
know what to enter.
I would like for the web page to pop-up a map, which would help in
selecting the delimiting coordinates. At a minimum, the map should show
North American political boundaries, and some additional regions and point
locations specific to our work. When the cursor is moved around on the
image, the lat/lon of the point under the cursor should be displayed.
Even better would be :
+ Ability to zoom and pan the map
+ User clicks and have coordinates displayed
+ User clicks/drags a rectangle and has coordinates entered into web query
form
Right now we have an OpenMap application which can do all but enter the
values into the web form, and I believe it might could do that with some
work, but the OpenMap requires either a client installed, which not
everyone has, or the loading of an java applet, which can be slow.
Ideally a solution would be cheap, fast, and easy to implement. Is there
such a thing? What alternatives are there?
tia, Gerald
