Simply changing the file types? Are you sure? What files change to what? example.shp=example.tab example.sbn=??? example.dbf=???

You could verify this by trying to just read it in any of the Arc products, but from the message you got it seems like there is some problem. If the Arc products can read it but the UT cannot, then I'd suggest you try an eval of the latest FME (which is the big brother of the UT), which will reflect any changes we've made to our shape reading recently.
