Well yes of course MI 7 can do that, but that is not what the poster said.

He said you could just change the file types....

Which sounds like a bunch of bunk to me.

SHP files can be opened directly in MapInfo (version 7).
Go to file open in MI Pro and pull down the file type list to select 
ESRI(R)
Shape file (*.shp) to open SHP files directly (of course it will create a
TAB file automatically by the same name as the SHP file)
Also dbf files can be opened in a similar manner.
