Hi Robert, I frankly recommend Mapserver over the MapX based products, MapXtreme and Discovery !
Admitted, it takes some initial learning, and there are some things you has to un/re-learn if you've been working with MapX before, but it's by no means an impossible task. It only took me about 1-2 months to get up to speed. If you're a programmer, forget about the regular Mapserver (CGI based), and concentrate on MapScript, which is a "PHP wrapped Mapserver" built by DM Solutions in Canada. MapScript is _very_ easy to work with, imho. And you don't need to go compile anything if you aren't into that game. The available binaries are excellent and works ! And if you're not into Linux yet, stay on Windows by all means. I've only used Mapserver (MapScript) on Win2000 until now, and it works perfectly. I do recommend that you use the OpenSource products all the way, i.e. Apache/PHP/MySQL etc., but again - it's a recommendation, not a must. I've also built MapScript solution with IIS and MS/SQL ! --------------------------------------------- I'm committed to helping pave the way for migrating MapInfo users to Mapserver, and is currently building tools to accomodate that end. The goal is to make a complete "click-and-publish" solution from Pro to Mapserver, and I'm getting there fast. Best regards/Med venlig hilsen Lars V.
