Then another tool that would allow you to move a line and everytime you stopped moving it, it would calculate the area that that line would split the polygon it overlays by.
I remember the discussion and challenge on this list, but didn't follow it up then. Too many fires to put out in the software at that stage, but am ready to do some cuter stuff now.

It HAS been done -- six or seven years ago by Robert Edwards of The MapTools Company. He extended MapBasic's capability through the use of some Windows APIs and the running output went into the status bar or the mesage window, but I thought it was a pretty clever *tour de force* demonstrating CAN to those who were sure about CAN'T! ;-)
It was called XMouse and you could get it and the source code with his MapTools SDK fo $50.
