While there are many fine ways of searching and replacing the text in the
workspaces, you could also let MapInfo Professional do the work for you at
runtime. If you go into Options, Preferences, Directories, the bottom
portion of that dialog let's you set search paths for us to look for your
tables. When we process a workspace, we will try the fixed path in the
workspace but it that fails, we will look along those search paths.

So, if your files are in a different directory structure from when the
workspaces were written, just enter the root(s) of those structures that
you would like searched. MapInfo Professional will find the tables and
load them. If you save the workspace again, the new locations will be used.
This might be slightly faster than having us search each time these are
opened. In general, however, these days file searches are quite fast.

I know this works because I often get user workspaces relating to different
issues. These usually come in a zip file with a workspace and a bunch of
tables. Sometimes these use many subpaths. The paths are never what I
actually have. I just extract the ZIP (with or without folders) underneath
my search root and then launch the workspace. It loads every time as long
as I have been sent everything.

It seems like this is not a well known feature as I regularly see
suggestions on how to rewrite those paths.

I hope this helps.

Greetings!

I just transferred all my data etc to a newer computer and have run into
a pathing problem with my files when I open up a workspace. When I
attempt to open a workspace, MapInfo (V7.5) wants me to indicate where
certain files are. Now not all of my files are in the same directory,
but rather are filled by project designations.

Is there an easy or less time consuming method to re-establish the
workspaces rather than going through each one and pointing to each file
and re-saving the workspace? If all the required files are present, why
can't MapInfo seek and acquire the files itself?

Any comments would be appreciated.
