I have used IrfanView with the sid plug-in which you can get from the IrfanView site.
You can convert them to a different raster type.
Then , I used UltraEdit, and in each tab file change the .sid extension to what ever format I had changed them to.

I have been sent a bunch of .SID format aerial photos. Anyone know how
I can translate these into a more common format without losing there
spatial reference?
I am not familiar with this file type.
