I have experimented with true type font symbols in ArcView - they operate
very similarly to the standard MapInfo true type font symbols. Both Arc and
standard MI symbols use the bottom left corner of the symbols as the anchor
point and calcualte offsets to poistion the symbol. Symbols tend to "bounce
around" a bit when you zoom in and out. But my guess is that you can import
certain Arc symbols and get similar funcitonality in MI.
For MapInfo users we provide a set of annotated geological symbols in our
commercial GeoBasemap Mapping System product. These are true type fonts
defined with the anchor point as the symbol centroid. We hold the symbol
annotate (eg dip or foliation angle) in a separate MI table and
automatically maintain database pointers between the symbol and annotate.
As geologists we are used to working with strike direction (with dip
defined by the right hand rule) or dip and dip direction. Not the
counterclockwise MI text rotation. We built a new user interface that
translates the geologists world into MI defintions.
I did import our GeoBasemap symbols into ArcView once, but did not go ahead
with the code needed to make them effective in Arc.
Since MI V4.5 our Geological users have been reasonably happy with the
flexibility of MI lilne type definitions. We catalogue standard MI line
types in a style library and make them accessable via user defined names -
eg the user picks a thick dashed line and defined it as "Fault -
Approximate". This appears to work quite well, and staying with MI line
types means the maps still work on sytems that don't have our add on tools.
Most of our customers build GeoBasemap style drfinitions based on the line
types in the AustIMM field Geologists Manual or similar learned society
publications.

Hi the list
Compliments of the season, and may 1999 be a good one...
Does anyone know where I could find a decent geology symbolset for MI,
particularly line styles? Or failing that, is it possible to somehow get
ArcView symbols into MI?
Any help would be most gratefully received.
Regards
Jonathan
