Geology is very much an international science. I suggest there is a core
standard of internationaly accepted geological symbols. We tried to pick
out many of the common and standard ones in the 125 or so we distribute
with the core GeoBasemap product. We are keen to add additional standard
symbols as customers require them, but we can't just add "new symbols for
local conditions" into the standard distribution set - That would undermine
the excellent and serious work of those promoting cartographic standards. .

You can create and add your own symbols. That is the recommended way of
dealing with "non standard" requirements. See the GeoBasemap user manual
page 108 (special symbols fonts) or Page 52 (defining standard graphical
styles from MapInfo fonts). The guys at GeoMax (regular contributors to
this list) do represent us and do tailor true type fonts locally.

I am interested in hearing contributions from the list as to how we, as
GeoBasemap developers, and responsible members of the mapping community,
should respond to requests for exotic symbology. We have always taken a
hard line in supporting standards. But that is sometimes to the detrimnent
of our short term commercial interests.

We operate in an international community, dependant on electonic dats sets.
I would prefer to install a composite set of international symbols at all
sites, rather than the "localised sets" some other promote. I don't want to
comprimise the international transfer of data sets as MapInfo tables. We
have tried to keep the geological symbol set relatively tight - we install
around 20 millitary font sets on each machine for our defence cutomers. I
believe that is a bit over the top.

I would love feedback from any of our many North Americal customers on any
additional symbols they believe we should add from the USGS set or other
international reference sets. Please email me directly, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
