Just out of curiosity, would you say you've gotten at least $895
worth of benefit out of it? Or how much do you think it's really
worth?
When I think of all the time it's saved me on production jobs
(even minus the time spent writing applications), and consider
the value of the data I've been able to create from free net and
depository library sources, plus the income I make doing contract
work with it, plus the non-mapping tools I've built with it (CASE
tools, HTML page generators, etc.), it's a no-brainer--it's been
a pretty good deal. It's the EASIEST Windows programming I've
ever done. Of course, it would be nice to have it all cheaper,
but once you buy it, you don't have to keep paying royalties for
every app you build, and it leverages the value of MapInfo SO
much!
I expect we'll see a similar effect with Vertical Mapper now that
they've released their developer's kit. The one thing I've always
disliked about Windows and WIMP interfaces in general is that
they require a human in the drivers seat constantly exercising
his or her eye-hand coordination. There's a lot of useless
waiting going on in that situation. I betcha one day there'll be
this cool new innovation in Windows: a command-line interface!
But I feel a pulpit-pounding sermon coming on, so I'll shut up
for now.
