You set the range, interval, labelling, perhaps even layer control variations, etc. and MapInfo draws the grid for you without any need for data sets. Imagine no more multi-MB data files just showing a fine grid. Native support for graticules may also open the way to more advanced features in layout windows. e.g. map rim coordinate labels. This type of feature seems to be implemented in ArcView's graticule extension very well. Grid layer properties could be stored in workspace files with a modest MapBasic construct. I don't think the whole implementation of this would not be particularly difficult. I suggested this to MapInfo last year...
