I agree Warren,
I remember Atlas*GIS (for DOS) handling this sort of thing OK about 10 years
ago!
(And scale bars likewise....).
Wouldn't it be nice if you could draw a box in the corner of a map (or
layout), and whatever scale you were at, MapInfo would automatically fill
that "box" with the right scale bar and RF for your particular zoom.

Or how about native support for grids in MapInfo? By this I mean a special
layer (like cosmetic
layer) which has properties for drawing grids. You set the range, interval,
labelling, perhaps even
layer control variations, etc. and MapInfo draws the grid for you without
any need for data sets.
Imagine no more multi-MB data files just showing a fine grid. Native support
for graticules may
also open the way to more advanced features in layout windows. e.g. map rim
coordinate labels.
This type of feature seems to be implemented in ArcView's graticule
extension very well.
Grid layer properties could be stored in workspace files with a modest
MapBasic construct. I don't
think the whole implementation of this would not be particularly difficult.
I suggested this to MapInfo last year...
