I have used it for 4 years and MapInfo as well. There is certainly not a
$1000 difference. Its easy to use, it makes great maps, the people at
Caliper are reasonably responsive, and I am not all that convinced that the
MapInfo features are "richer" . There are several features of Maptitude
that are not present in other packages, like instant maps - type in an
address and an incredible map appears with several layers. Polygon overlays
on the tool bar. (try to find "overlay" in either of the competitors HELP
file) The shipped data is superb; I guess I think it's a "GIS package for
the rest of us". It has a programming language for another $400 which is
pretty good and getting better. Why vendors, save ESRI, don't throw in is
the app development language; I do not know why ... (if they did they might
be really be serious ESRI competitors) Maptitude reads ESRI files better
than ArcView, it does fine with MapInfo MIF files. I never had a problem
except projection anomalies with e00 files which Caliper Corp has been quick
to help me fix. My impression is that the user community is small, but then
again Caliper has never started a user listserve. I have taught workshops
in ArcView, MapInfo and Maptitude. Its takes until day 3 until for my users
to get what's really going on in ArcView, early in day 2 for MapInfo and
noon the first day for Maptitude. My users are public health practitioners
who are focused very much on the task and not the tool (not everyone is in
love with GIS) - for people like this, Maptitude is the choice. However a
sleeper is Manifold at www.manifold.net. ~ $100. Its pretty impressive.
