Variograms measure spatial autocorrelation. K functions are used in
determining whether clusters are statistically meaningful like leukemia
cases around a nuclear plant, smoothing methods refer to ways to adjust
rates of, say disease, when trying to calculate rates which are in an area
of low population where rates appear really high because a rare event
happens to occur in a small population.

One of the best books I know about this stuff for ordinary human beings like
me, is Bailey & Gatrell, Interactive Spatial Analysis, Longman Scientific &
Technical, Essex, England, ISBN 0-582-24493-5, 1995. Comes with a little GIS
(DOS) package to get you started.
