Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html

Giovanni & Kevin: You might have a little bit of a point, but I imagine
most think its OK to have a little diversion. After all, there are other
things to discuss besides the wonders or lack of them, of Maptitude. And
lately, concerning the elections we need a diversion.

But in the main, I beg to differ. How maps are colored has a profound
influence on how maps are interpreted. It is the responsibility of people
who use a GIS to be savvy on this issues.

People's stereotypical views are reflected in colors: Red meaning danger,
communist, high rate, etc. and stereotypes are dangerous profiles for any
group to promote in a map. Or are they? Further it reflects a cultural bias.
So the discussion is more serious than it appears. I think most Americans
are comfortable with blue for republicans, red for democrats, and I wonder
why? I wonder what colors would be used to represent them in a predominately
Moslem or Hindu culture?

Recently I sat in a meeting where there was a long discussion concerning how
to represent racial groups on a map. People did not feel comfortable with
white, black, red and yellow for White, Black, Native American and Asian.
Why or why not is this something to be concerned about?

So I think the topic, perhaps aside from the jokes (come on, they are
harmless ) is a very serious topic indeed.

Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html

Dear all:

The purpose of this mailing list is to discuss Maptitude and Maptitude for
the Web.
While thematic mapping inevitably brings up political and social issues,
this email list may not be the appropriate forum for long threads of
political comments
and one-line jokes.
When there are 100 people on the list, any joke may end up offending
someone,
and the thread of discussion that it generates may be distracting from the
focus of the
list.

Best regards,

Giovanni
