Trying to find out what function to use was the hardest part of learning the
DK for me also.
I agree that the useful cross-reference information needs to be in the help
file although it could get pretty repetitive. I'm not sure what would be
best for these kinds of questions.

In any case, one immediate solution is to do a global search thru all the
.rsc files in dk_aids.exe for the function in question to see how other
programmers did it. When I searched for AddLayerToWorkspace, the first
entry found was in batchmap.rsc and looking at it answers the question
pretty quickly.
The two use lines from batchmap.rsc are:

     layers=GetDBLayers(ddir+msa_file)
     msa_layer=AddLayerToWorkspace(layers[1], ddir+msa_file, layers[1])  //
add layer back in

Hope this helps,
Larry Manire

Hi Howard,

Wow, it's great to hear from the president of the company. I really
like your software and I think it's a great deal (financially). I am
one of the vocal critics, but that's only because you guys listen --
I know that if I have my say, you might change the product to be
better for me!!

Anyway -- I think a pdf file would work just fine, and I'm sure that
would be a cheaper alternative than giving everyone a bound copy.

I think Larry must have had a bit more of a programming background
than I have. I've done some limited programming in a variety of
languages. I easily understood the syntax and logic of GISDK, but I
have a horrible time figuring out what the parameters mean, and where
to find the values for functions on existing layouts and maps.

Example: AddLayerToWorkspace() The help file specifies the parameter
layer_name. Unfortunately, the help doesn't tell me how to find out
what value to pass it. Most of the help pages are equally
uncrossreferenced, making it impossible for someone like me to get
started.

Bob
