Please let me check out your doc.

The issue is that if Caliper really wants to promote GISDK as a part of Maptitude and TC that they must provide written documentation. I have taught Mapt for years and all my students rely on the manual. Maybe the next generation will be happy with HELP and screen reading of manuals, but not yet!

They had a great manual (someone ran off with mine) a few years ago. Their current Mapt manual is quite good, I just cannot believe that providing a GISDK part is not all that big of a deal.

I and of course others encouraged Caliper  to include GISDK as part of Mapt for no additional cost, and they  eventually did that, but they forgot the last step. Documentation! MapInfo provides with MapBasic a very nice training manual. ArcGIS  has all kinds of their own and 3rd party manuals. Caliper does not even need to provide a manual, a pdf file will do ore they could see it as an extra. Manifold ($250) has amazing features and provides a several hundred page pdf with every detail one can imagine and a software update every time they find a bug.

Thanks for your reply,

Hi Richard,

It's hard to believe that Caliper could continue to keep the cost down by printing additional manuals.  That is probably the primary reason for providing it as a help file.  I think you would be surprised at how quickly you can pick up the basics of writing a DK program if you took an hour or two to do the Quick Start at Help-Contents-Help for GISDK-Welcome to GISDK Help!-Quick Start.

The harder part comes in choosing from the hundreds of functions to do what you want to do and that takes using the Outline of Topics and time and practice.  But you could write a simple program that's pretty useful with a simple interface with probably a day of effort. Your next program would take less time, etc. If you're absolutely new to computers and programming it could take a little longer to get used to thinking like a programmer.  The language is no harder than learning BASIC (remember that?).  If you get stuck on how to do something we DK programmers are here to help.

I admit that having a super thorough printed manual would be nice but we don't have it.  When I was learning the DK 9 years ago I did prepare a 5 page Word document summarizing the syntax, rules and use of the DK.  It was very helpful as a quick reference, similar to the reference cards we used to use for BASIC back in the 80's.  It is still useful except that it doesn't describe the recently added array dot notation capability which is exceedingly useful.  I would be willing to email the .doc file to anyone interested.  Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

From an informal perusal of GISDK, Avenue, MapBasic, and a variety of possibilities in ArcGIS, and Manifold, GISDK offers a richer function capability. But there is no user manual. There once was, but it has disappeared. I find it difficult to learn GISDK from the HELP in Maptitude.

I think that an organized attempt to point users to a "really, you can do this too" GISDK programming website and printable manual would be really helpful.

GISDK could become a major item to market. But that will not happen without a manual and on-line content.

I'm getting the impression that a lot of list members are good at Maptitude
but are not aware of the awesome power of the GISDK that comes with
Maptitude (at no extra cost--unlike other GIS products!)  If you do anything
repetitively in Maptitude, it is a candidate for automation using the DK and
for many things a small program can be written very quickly that can save
you hours and hours of hand work in Maptitude.

In Maptitude go to Help-Contents-Help for GISDK-Welcome to GISDK
Help!-Outline of Topics  to see everything about the DK organized by topic.
This is the best way to find specific functions and macros.  To repeat, a
small investment in a DK based addin can save you a lot of time if you use
Maptitude a lot.  Virtually anything you want to do can be automated with a
menu, dialog or toolbox interface addin.

To add to what Chuck Hast said, Armando and I have written hundreds of these
small programs as well as major applications for many users since the DK
came out in 1995.  I have subcontracted Dk work and continue to subcontract
to Armando, and also worked side-by-side with him for over a year and can
attest that he is an expert in GIS, Maptitude use and GISDK programming.  He
is fast, thorough and conscientious and I highly recommend him for your DK
work.  He is unquestionably the most capable GISDK programmer available as a
consultant right now.

A big hand to Armando, he has been a big help to me on several things
I have been working on.

[Big Crass commercial plug]
Armando does a lot of commercial work built around Maptitude, he really
knows it well and can do work for you if you need something done, and
can not get it done in house for whatever reason or just need some work
done and do not have the time, people, >>fill in your reason<< He offered
his services to me for some work for my company, but our Oracle person
"decided" that she could make Oracle do what I needed done so we did not
take up his offer, but anyone who goes that extra step to get my attention
deserves my commercial plugs. Put him on your list of people who can make
Maptitude dance for you.
[End]

Armando, thanks and a big hand to you from the Maptitude user community.
