The shield and line style information are stored in "style" files. Try the following:
1) Make a copy of the highway layer (best to do this within Maptitude to ensure that all 9 of its component files get copied).
2) Delete the .st1 component file from the copy.
3) Open the copied highway layer (sans .st1 file) within Maptitude.
