Thank you!  The first option did what I was trying to do.  I don't quite
follow your second suggestion, but the first one got the job done.

Go to Map, Feature Display Settings and hide or drop the labels with the 
number shield, you can also add, modify or edit other Feature Display 
Settings there. Otherwise, if you want, you can copy the layer to your 
HD, and then modify the structure of the Geographic File, I personally 
use to rename any offending field (in this case CCSTYLE) to _CCSTYLE. 
When I want to get back to the previous settings it will take only the 
trouble to remove the "_" and save the new file. The solution provide 
by  Moshe will also do the job, but I believe this one is less drastic.
