Yeah, I remember going to the Amtrak counter at Union Station in DC circa 1979, where Amtrak occupied a small portion of the old palatial train station built circa 1908. and having this lady tell me that in 1950 they had a passenger train leaving the station every three minutes whereas then they only had 8 per day and that it took six hours longer to reach Chicago then as it did in 1950 due to poor track maintenance.
