I don't think anyone is "writing it off." But there is one question,
which has so far not been addressed (to my knowledge), and I'd like
to hear what people think.
It is acknowledged that Chavez made the call. And, he is head of
state for Venezuela, which poses a problem. Years ago, the Cuban
revolution faced the problem of furthering revolution on the one hand
and establishing trade and diplomatic relations with both world
capitalism and the Soviet bloc on the other. As it worked out, Fidel
became the diplomat and Che became the voice of the revolution, a
happy division of labor until Che's death.
Chavez has his hands full as head of a state surrounded by a
privileged bureaucracy riddled with a corrupt old guard and petit
bourgeois careerists. The Venezuelan regime is seriously threatened
on every front. Is it wise to connect a future 5th International so
closely with a regime, as currently seems to be the case?
