Jim,

While I am not a member of the NCP I must say I don't think that there is a
contradiction in their position of supporting votes for Labour at general
elections, while dismissing the SLP as social-democratic.

The arguement from the NCP (and CPB) as I understand it is that given that
the Labour Party is a social democratic party with organic links to
organised labour there was little point in creating a small, left social
democratic party with links to a small section of organised labour.

As I understand it their view is that the best place for left social
democrats is fighting the right wing social democrats inside the Labour
Party, while M-L's should join the Communist Party.

This seems an entirely sensible position to me except for the sad fact that
there is no effective Communist Party in Britain.

I think you correctly identify the SLP as a party in the class-struggle
trade unionist tradition and Scargill's political views have always
contained a strong syndicalist strand which has a resonance in the British
labour movement.

On the broader topic of the British situation one of the major problems
facing ML's in Britain today is the dominance in radical circles of
Trotskyism on a level unrivalled elsewhere.

We simply have to address this question, examine its reasons and find the
right strategy to outflank the Trots. This is something the CPB and NCP have
shown little interest in doing.

Harry
