I don't know how much press was given to the 40th anniversary of John Lennon's
death, but right around the time of Lennon's death, The Clash released their
landmark "Sandinista!"  three record set. The Clash were one of those bands
that made the deepest impact on me. The album was reviewed by Creem ,in the
very same issue that paid tribute to John Lennon, where a very fitting
comparison was made to Lennon's "Sometime In New York City" ,Strummer and Jones
had basically updated Lennon's most political statement ,for the Reagan era.
This Jacobin article strikes me as basically a fluff piece. There is really no
way you can discuss Lennon's radicalization ,after meeting Yoko, without
mentioning  "Sometime In New York City" .
