Charlie quotes well less than half my sentance which begins: " I don't doubt that Trump and his cohort will try even harder in a second term to rollback democratic rights and use their control of the state apparatus to consolidate their hold on power” and then continues "but I doubt they will attempt...etc.” I further noted that the Trump Repubicans are also set on attacking the social and economic gains won by the working class and its allies. Against this, Charlie counters with a New Republic article stating that "i f the Republicans gain control of both Houses of Congress, expect a state-authorized Constitutional Convention to eviscerate core rights and protections most Americans hold dear. ” He reads (or prefers to read) into this that the Trumpists will launch a full-fledged assault to replace the existing Constitution with a one party state which will outlaw the Democrats and the unons and other mass organizations and eliminate freedom of assembly and the right to vote - essential features of fascism, which was the subject of my reply to Michael. The New Republic article, in fact, nowhere comes near to suggesting this is what the Trumpists have in mind. It states that they are seeking a “centrepiece amendment” to the Constitution which would gut " popular programs such as Social Security, unemployment insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.” Whether a) their scheme for a “constitutional convention” to implement these rollbacks even gets off the ground, b) whether the Democratic half of the country will passively accept it, and c) whether the Republican working class base will also go along with these planned rollbacks are the real issues the broad US left will have to contend with if Trump returns to office. Bobby MacVeety is correct to point out that the left can turn the right-wing babble about the Constitution to its advantage by directing attention to the gerrymandered political system, unaccountable judiciary, and other constitutional arrangements which have perpetuated the unequal distribution of wealth and power in the US since its formation. It’s not yet time for Marxmail’s moderators to begin making preparations to host an underground list serve against a fascist dictatorship. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
