I also agree with much of what Michael says here, with the possible exception of the Nazi-Soviet pact which may have bought time for the Red Army to reorganize after the purges but did not prevent the Nazi invasion a little under two years later which came within a razor's edge of succeeding. I would have to review the diplomatic maneuvering of that period to see whether there was a possibility of a pact with the bourgeois democracies against Hitler up to the moment of the Hitler-Stalin pact. I beleive one of the other by-products of the pact was to disorient and demoralize rank and file Communists outside the Soviet Union, many of whom left their parties. But perhaps this has been exaggerated in the accounts I read.
