Our experience in Victoria, capital of British Columbia, is the same. The demonstrators are far more numerous than the Zionists and have consistently turned out every week to rally at the Legislature and then to march through the downtown. They're mainly youthful, which is great to see, but also inexperienced so that their anger and exhuberance sometimes gives way to chants beyond "end the occupation now", "ceasefire now", "every week the media lies, a neighbourhood in Gaza dies", and "free, free Palestine" to ones more likely to alienate rather than attract sympathetic observers, eg. "people, people, where are you, kids are dying, shame on you", "who is the revolution, we are the revolution!", "intifada revolution" etc. I'm curious to know whether this mix of good and more questionable slogans is universal or mostly home-grown.
I'll admit that I found the singing of the Internationale at a recent rally (written lyrics distributed to the many unfamiliar with the anthem) and Bella Ciao, the Italian partisan song sung by a group at an earlier demonstration, very inspiring. Clearly, some of the young organizers whose families are of Palestinian and Middle Eastern origin have their hearts and minds in the right place. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
