I think this Nation column and its responses all reflect a dearth of acknowledgement regarding the matter of private military contractors like Blackwater (now known as Academi). The Proud Boys and other militia groups are a bunch of theme park clowns while the private military contractors ACTUALLY have a deeper resemblance to the fascist militias. Blackwater cofounder Eric Prince is the brother of Betsy DeVos and it is not inconceivable to imagine those firms playing an increasing role in domestic policing, especially as the privatization of public utilities continues unabated. I have to admit that, after 9 years of back-and-forth about the issue of fascism, it is rather depressing to see invocations of 90+ year old formulas regarding a European phenomena being imposed upon the US, which is not a Westminster-style parliamentary democracy akin to Italy or Germany. Robert Paxson and WEB Du Bois were both emphatic that the true form of US fascism was the KKK/Dixiecrat regime in the south. The treatment of Black prisoners in the South during Jim Crow bore a striking similarity to the concentration camps. The Nuremberg Race Laws were in fact based upon the racial laws in the south (see James Q Whitman's "Hitler's American Model"). Lebensraum was formulated by Karl Haushofer, one of Hitler's tutors, as a "Monroe Doctrine" for the Germans. The Communists and Trotskyists both missed that part and it was to their detriment.
