German Hitlerism was not the same as Italian Fascism, where Catholic reaction
to the Bolshevik Revolution and the Italian worker's movement created a
proletarian strata of Blackshirts. Likewise, in the US, it was working class
whites that became the base of the Klan in response to Reconstruction and,
later, the advances of Blacks at the time of World War I, particularly in
regards to returning Black vets who argued they had fought in Europe and so
were entitled to the same treatment as white vets. If we were to look for a US
iteration of fascism that emerged at the same time as Italian fascism, it would
be the 1919 Red Summer, which was occurring at the same time as the Palmer
raids, the formation of the CPUSA, and the last gasps of the old IWW.
