The industrialists in Britain needed to have the corn laws overturned because
they drove up the cost of living for workers thereby making labor more
expensive for the industrialists. Once those laws were overturned,
industrialists could now keep wages down more easily and thus prices of
manufactured goods could be more easily kept down. And in turn, this made it
much easier for British industralists to dominate markets, both domestic and
foreign.

And in reaction to that, the landowners, smarting over their defeat in the
battle over the corn laws, were more than willing to support trade unionists
and others who were lobbying for legislation to regulate working hours.

And yes, Marx had a great deal to say on these subjects.
