This is one of the better essays out there on the falsehood of Furr's conclusions. Amazingly well written. I want to add something else: WHY did any of the defendents...all of them for that matter...confess at all? Furr doesn't explain this.
Secondly, there was not right to examine evidence by the defense. Oh, and there WAS NO DEFENSE allowed as advocates for those accused couldn't object. As Jim explains in his document, once the charge is made it is up to the defendant on the stand to contest those charges. You have no lawyers, no defense whatsoever because it was not allowed. This is call railroading a confession and this happens in the U.S. *before* trials by cops who want to get a confessions. They can be challenged in U.S. courts and done so successfully (see the Miranda Decision). The fact is there is no way to challenge this is Soviet courts so we don't know if threats were made at all or they were not made...simply because "transcripts" were political documents and thus edited for advantage of the prosecution. I told Furr in person years ago after I read "Khrushchev Lied" that "confessionary evidence" should only ever be used with substantially hard evidence to back it up and thus his "evidence" is nonsense in such a railroaded political set of trials. --- I should point out a factoid just out of interest: The US SWP sent a letter to the prosecutors at the late 40s "Nuremberg Trials" asking them to inquire about German contacts among the many different oppositionist groups and individuals.
